What to Bring to an Estate Planning Consultation with our Team

Do you have all your ducks in a row with your estate plan? If you answer yes, let me ask you when the last time you reviewed it was? Are you clear on what happens when you die? Yes, I said it…when you die. There are few guarantees in life but one that I can guarantee you is that you will, in fact, die. Having practiced probate law myself, I have seen the negative impact of failing to accept that fact until it is too late. The widow sorting through stacks of documents trying to locate everything while also trying to grieve. The children surprised that mom and dad hadn’t revisited their plan in years and frustrated that the plan no longer makes sense. The attorney learning the clients purchased new assets and failed to properly title them consistent with the well-designed plan adopted years prior. We at First Citizens Wealth Management are committed to helping our clients take a proactive approach to planning. So, what do you need to gather to set up a consultation with one of our Trust Officers?

It helps to write down your goals and desires and also what keeps you up at night when you think about your estate plan. Remember to think about family dynamics, health issues, unique assets, etc. Remember, even when a situation is complex not making a decision is a decision. Be sure to consider the impact of not making a decision. A plan can be revised.

We are happy to provide a Checklist to assist you in gathering documents. The main areas include:

Assets. For example, your home(s), vehicle(s), insurance policies, retirement and investment accounts and bank accounts. We will need to know who owns what as the title of assets has an impact on planning decisions.

Liabilities. While this may feel uncomfortable to discuss, any significant debts you have must be considered when creating an estate plan.
Cash Flow. It is helpful to consider your current cash flow to understand the projected growth of your estate and assist in optimizing your existing plan.

Tax Returns. Taxes drive a lot of planning decisions. If we can review your current tax situation, we gain a better understanding of planning options.

Contacts. We believe estate planning is a collaborative effort. Thus, it is helpful to provide information for your CPA, attorney, insurance agent or other advisors.

Existing documents. If you have a will, trust or powers of attorney in place, please provide copies of those documents.

So, if you haven’t had time to gather the above-information, should we still meet? YES. Sometimes the biggest hurdle to planning is starting the conversation. We are able to help you get everything in order prior to adopting your plan with an attorney.

If you are ready to take the next step in your estate planning journey, give us a call. Even if you don’t have all of the answers or know the right questions to ask, we are here to guide you through the process and ensure your goals are carried out. We will work closely with your trusted professionals to give you peace of mind that your wishes will be carried out.
