Want to Open a Bank Account Online?

In today’s busy world, the ability to do things online is priceless. That includes banking. Opening a brand new bank account online with First Citizens is quick. It takes around 10 minutes — much faster than visiting one of our physical branch locations in person. From our website, we make applying for a bank account engaging, intuitive, and as hassle-free as possible. Before we get into all of that though, you need to meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Be a US resident with a US residential address
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be able to provide a government-issued ID

Ok. So, here’s a rundown of what to expect when you open a bank account online.

Step 1: Decide what type of account you would like to open online.
Figure out the primary purpose of the account. There are 3 categories of accounts to choose from:

  1. Spending (also known as a Checking) Account

We offer a variety of spending accounts: BaZing Plus, BaZing, or Basic. Click here to compare them and see which terms and features work best for you.
  2. Savings Account
In this category, you can choose from Platinum, Basic, or Christmas Club. Click here to determine which account fits your needs.
  3. Certificate of Deposit Account (also known as a CD)
If you want to save your money in an account that earns a higher rate of interest than a savings account and you don’t readily need access to that money, you may want a look into a CD (certificate of deposit). In this category, there are several options to choose from based on the length of months: 6, 12, 18, 24, 36, 48, or 60. Click here to check out our CD Rates to help determine which CD option works best for you.

Step 2: Apply for your account
Be sure to have this checklist of items on hand:

  • Driver's License, Passport, Military ID, or State ID
  • U.S. Social Security Number
  • U.S. Citizenship or Resident alien status
  • External account information if funding from an external account

Why all the hassle with providing an ID? Well, requiring an ID helps us protect you from fraud. If someone obtains of your Social Security number, they could apply for an account in your name to hide illegal money. We verify your ID to make sure it’s really you opening the account, and not someone trying to steal your identity.

You’ll also need to provide basic information about yourself such as your name, date of birth, main phone number, employment information, email address, and home address (even though you’re operating in the virtual world, federal law requires you to provide a physical address—where you actually live).

Collecting all of these items before you start the application process is a good thing because the webpage can time out and close if you leave your computer/mobile device unattended for too long. If you’re an existing customer of First Citizens, make sure you have your relevant customer information on hand just in case you need it.

When you ready, click here to begin the process via our secure online application.

After you complete the online application for an account, you’ll get an email with information about what happens next. This email should come within a minute or two after you submit the application.

Step 3: Make a deposit
You’ll need to make an opening deposit. There are a variety of funding sources to choose from:

  • Transfer from other Financial Institution
  • Credit/Debit Card
  • Transfer From Existing Account
  • Check by Mail
  • Check/Cash in Branch
  • Wire Transfer

Minimum required deposits often increase with a higher interest rate or better features offered.

If the account you signed up for includes a debit card, it’ll arrive in the mail after you’ve been approved — you’ll find out how long it takes to ship in the confirmation email. The debit card and PIN are sent to you separately for security reasons. When you get your card, you need to sign the back and activate it so you can make withdrawals. This is a simple process that can be completed by calling the number on the sticker attached to the card or by going to an ATM and using the PIN.

Online banking has come a long way in the last decade, and because it offers so many benefits, it will, without a doubt, continue to grow by providing customers with added features, robust security measures, and time-saving conveniences. If you have any questions contact us via email or call 800-423-1602. Have peace of mind about your money by knowing that First Citizens Bank is federally insured by the FDIC.
